The following is an update as of February 12, 2021:

The Braille and Talking Book Library circulation service has resumed and is currently available. Books and machines are being shipped, and new patron applications are being processed. Our telephone service is still suspended until further notice. BTBL staff are working on-site on a limited basis, though the Reading Room remains closed to the public.

Mail service:
We are now able to ship talking books, braille, descriptive DVDs, and talking book players. You may still experience some delays in receiving materials. Patrons may now return any remaining library materials in their possession as we will be able to process returned mail. All returned materials are quarantined before being circulated to patrons.

If for any reason you DO NOT wish to receive items by mail at this time, please let us know by email at btbl@library.ca.gov.

Telephone Service:
At this time we are unable to resume normal telephone service. We hope to facilitate full telephone service as soon as possible, and in the meantime we are still available through email at btbl@library.ca.gov.

BARD service:
The Braille and Audio Reading Download service known as BARD is available and we are processing new BARD applications. We urge you to register for BARD, where you can get all the books you want without receiving physical items in the mail. BARD has been improved in the last few years, and is easier to use than ever--especially BARD Mobile, which allows you to listen to books on your smartphone or tablet. To register for BARD, please visit https://nlsbard.loc.gov/CA1A/ApplicationInstructions.html .
