Annotation |
Letters written 1832-1839 by artist George Catlin during his journey to depict the Plains Indians. Sensing that the growing animosity of whites would lead to destruction of the tribes, he gives detailed descriptions of Indian lives and customs. He writes of his admiration of the people he studied, and strongly criticizes their mistreatment. Introduction by Peter Matthiessen notes the importance of Catlin's portraits of a vanishing culture.
