Ildefonso, born deaf and now in his late twenties, is a Mexican Indian who has never been taught language. When the author discovers him in a class, she must introduce him to the concept of language before she can begin to teach him how to communicate. Only after he understands and starts to sign does Schaller learn that experts believe that people cannot be taught unless they learn language skills in childhood.
