From 1935 to 1943 the Federal Writers' Project (FWP), a branch of the New Deal Works Progress Administration (WPA), hired people to write about the state, city, town, or locale where they lived. These writings were compiled into a set of automobile travel books known as the American Guide Series. This book gathers more that 500 excerpts from this series into a single volume arranged by theme.
