Annotation |
Pennsylvania, which means "Penn's Woods," was founded by William Penn, a member of the Society of Friends, or Quakers, as a haven of religious freedom. Europeans of all faiths flocked to the new colony, which decreed that Native Americans also be treated justly because they too believed in God, whom they called the Great Spirit. An introduction to Pennsylvania for grades 4-7 and older readers.
