Annotation |
Drawing heavily on their journals and letters, Smith chronicles the twenty-five-year association between Ralph Waldo Emerson, a financially well-placed teacher, and Henry David Thoreau, a struggling student, which began at Harvard in 1837. The relationship faltered for a while with the publication of Walden, but was renewed when Thoreau's health began to fail. 1999.
