Sojourner Truth was born a slave in New York in 1797 or 1798. When she was born, her mother named her Isabelle, and like other slaves she took the last name of her master. When she was a young woman she escaped to freedom and tried unsuccessfully to reunite her family. She then took the name Sojourner Truth and began a career of speaking out against slavery throughout New England and the Midwest. For grades 3-6.
