Annotation Franklin D. Roosevelt was born in 1882 into a wealthy, well-known New York family. Shortly after finishing the Columbia School of Law, he was elected to the New York State Senate. At the age of thirty-nine polio paralyzed his legs, but he did not let that stop him. He was the only president elected to four terms, serving from 1933 until his death in 1945.
