Sundiata becomes king of the west African kingdom of Mali in the thirteenth century, ushering in its glorious period. Although his greatness has been prophesied, it seems to many that he will never fulfill such a destiny. Sundiata can not speak or walk as a young boy. But he overcomes physical disabilities, treachery, and disgrace to become the "lion king." For grades 4-7 and older readers.
