Annotation |
Jefferson Davis was born in Kentucky and grew up in Mississippi. A graduate of West Point and a lieutenant in the United States Army, he began his political career with election to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1845. When the Deep South states seceded from the Union in 1861, Davis, a leading supporter of states' rights and slavery, was elected president of the Confederate States of America. For grades 6-9 and older readers.
